Yankees Receive Great News Regarding Top Trade Target

The New York Yankees have received a boost in their potential pursuit of a major trade candidate. New York is expected to address its pitching needs at some point this offseason. Whether the team can land a top free agent starter, however, remains to be seen. If they cannot persuade a top pitcher to join the club, they will have to take a serious look at the trade market.

One particular player that the Yankees have been linked with is Miami Marlins starter Edward Cabrera. Bleacher Report recently proposed a trade that would send Cabrera to the Bronx for former top prospect Jasson Dominguez. The mock deal seemingly works for both teams. The Yankees need another starter, while the Marlins could use another bat.

Although New York has been linked with Cabrera, the two frontrunners for the pitcher have been the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros. Nevertheless, the two teams have apparently dropped out of the race. According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, Baltimore and Houston are no longer pursuing Cabrera. This would seemingly give the Yankees a much better chance of potentially acquiring the star.

The Orioles and Astros are out on the Cabrera sweepstakes because they both recently acquired starting pitchers via trade. Baltimore grabbed Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays, while Houston picked up Mike Burrows from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both clubs had to give up some significant prospects and may not be willing to continue losing highly-rated young players.

New York Yankees Need a Pitcher Like Edward Cabrera in Their Rotation

GettyThe New York Yankees may have to offer multiple players to get Edward Cabrera.

The deal between Baltimore and Tampa could help lay the groundwork for any trade involving Cabrera. To acquire Baz, Baltimore had to give up their sixth, 10th, 11th, and 30th-rated prospects, as well as the 33rd-overall draft pick in 2026. Baz and Cabrera are somewhat similar pitchers, and both have three years of team control remaining.

New York, or any other team, may have to give up even more in order to get Cabrera, though. Although the duo has similarities, the Miami star has put up better numbers than Baz at this point in their careers. In fact, Cabrera has a higher WAR and strikeout rate, while also posting a lower ERA than Baz.

Because of this, the Yankees are likely going to have to include an additional prospect or two in a potential deal with the Marlins. Dominguez was once seen as New York’s undisputed top prospect in the organization. The outfielder, however, has only put up decent numbers so far in the big league. Nevertheless, Dominguez is still just 22 and is far from the finished product.

Yankees will be Without Two Key Starters to begin 2026

Acquiring Cabrera may be costly for the Yankees, but they desperately need to add starters ahead of 2026. The team will be without key pitchers Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon for at least the start of the upcoming season due to injuries. As a result, ace Max Fried is potentially the only truly reliable veteran in the rotation from 2025.

If Cabrera enters the fray, he could be New York’s number two starter behind Fried to start 2026. In a breakout 2025, the Miami pitcher posted a 3.53 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 150 strikeouts in 137.2 total innings. His 2.8 WAR would have led all Yankees pitchers in 2025 except Fried and Rodon.
