Jazz Chisholm Jr didn’t know he had been ejected from Tuesday night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. But he still wasn’t happy.
The star New York Yankees infielder was tossed after a controversial strike call in their loss, and he issued his opinion about the ejection — his second of the season.
Chisholm was tossed prior to the bottom of the ninth inning by home-plate umpire Mark Wegner after Chisholm argued the call during his strikeout in the top half of the frame then as he took his spot at third base after the Yankees took the field.
What Did Jazz Chisholm Say About Getting Ejected?
When Wegner called a strike on a 2-0 count below the bottom of the strike zone, Chisholm was clearly unhappy. The pitch had an impact on the rest of his at-bat, an important one in the game with one out, Cody Bellinger on first base and the tie scored at 3.
“The only thing I said in the at-bat was ‘that’s not a strike,’” Chisholm said after the game, a 5-4 Reds win in 11 innings. “We didn’t talk about that pitch ever again.
“I struck out, and I said ‘you don’t have to help him.’”
Chisholm argued the call with Wegner and continued barking from the dugout, but he said Yankees captain Aaron Judge helped calm him down.
Chisholm also shared his insights into why the veteran umpire finally threw him out of the game.
“I was warming up and throwing the ball from third to first, and like any player, you’re going to talk to yourself, you’re going to cool yourself down,” Chisholm said. “I was never looking at [Wegner], and when I was looking at him and saw him looking at me, I asked ‘why are you looking at me?’ and that’s when I got tossed.
“I don’t think that’s a good reason to toss anybody.”
Chisholm is known for his personality and bat and can run hot at times, especially at the plate. His other ejection came against the Tampa Bay Rays when umpire John Bacon tossed him for also arguing balls and strikes.
“If Iâm gonna go at an umpire, Iâm not gonna hide it. None of that,” Chisholm said. “If I wanted to say something to him, I would have said it. Nobody is gonna stop me from saying something to an umpire if I want to.
“For me, itâs just like, for me to not even say nothing to you and for me to ask you why youâre looking at me, and you toss me? I feel like thereâs a problem. I feel like itâs getting ridiculous now.â
What Did The Yankees Say About Jazz Chisholm Jr’s Ejection?
Judge tried to quell Chisholm’s anger, to no avail. But Yankees manager Aaron Boone was also frustrated when the third baseman was kicked out of the game.
“I donât want him getting tossed there. I want me to get tossed there in those situations,” Boone said. “Iâll have to continue to look into this. Iâve talked to Jazz about it. As far as was it justifiable, a lot of the conversation, my understanding, within the at-bat was not around that one pitch.”
Boone also concurred with Chisholm’s version of events. Coincidentally, Boone is the only other person in baseball that Wegner has ejected this season.
“Jazz is adamant that he didnât say anything to him, other than Mark looking at him and saying, âWhy are you looking at me?â” Boone said. “Thatâs when Mark ran him.â
