Yankees Trade Idea Lands 2-Time All-Star Starter to Kickstart New York’s Offseason

The New York Yankees have been relatively quiet to this point in these offseason months. The only meaningful-ish move New York has made is signing Ryan Yarborough to a small deal, but as other AL East teams remain active in the player transaction market, the Yankees are falling behind.

With it being MLB’s hot stove season, the rumors are swirling from all angles in the trade market. One name that has picked up a bit of traction in the last week or so is Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta, who is becoming one of the best starters in baseball, so why would Milwaukee want to trade him?

Should the Yankees Trade for Freddy Peralta?

It would be a league-altering move in MLB if Freddy Peralta is moved, but it would make sense on the end of the Brewers if they have no plans of signing him to a long-term deal. 2026 is Peralta’s last year of team control before he is a free agent, and payroll concerns have always held the Brewers back in terms of signings.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon report that the New York Yankees are one of the few teams to inquire about the two-time All-Star starter.

In this trade idea, the New York Yankees acquire Freddy Peralta, but in exchange, they would give up Jasson Domínguez, Will Warren, and prospect Ben Hess. The Yankees have to make a big splash like this if they want to continue competing in the AL East.

Freddy Peralta

GettyFreddy Peralta pitches against the Chicago Cubs during the first inning in game one of the Division Series at American Family Field on October 04, 2025.

Peralta is coming off one of/if not the best, seasons as a starter in his career. He posted a 2.70 ERA over 33 starts, 176.2 innings, and 204 strikeouts to go along with an impressive WHIP of 1.075.

No deal is close, according to the two MLB insiders, but talks are fluid and sure to continue throughout the offseason.

How Does This Help the Yankees?

The New York Yankees are in desperate need of starting pitching going into the 2026 season, well in advance of Spring Training. Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt are all expected to start the season sidelined.

While the asking price for giving up Dominguez, Warren, and a top-10 prospect might be high, Milwaukee would certainly ask for a package similar to what it would receive in return for Peralta, who is a certified ace. Peralta has struck out 200+ batters in three straight seasons,

He’s also a two-time All-Star on the right side of 30 (age 29), and just finished top-5 in NL Cy Young voting. All-in-all, Peralta has a career ERA of 3.59 in nine seasons, and 1153 strikeouts.

As the MLB winter meetings are set to close out this week, that doesn’t mean that the hot stove will cool down by any means, but the Yankees must get going at some point this winter if they aim to get back to the Fall Classic in 2026.
