Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks will be the player the New York Yankees will show the most interest in at the deadline, according to nearly every report. However, outside of him, the Yankees could be interested in a few players on the Diamondbacks’ roster. Ultimately, if the Yankees could walk away with Suarez and someone like Merrill Kelly, it could change the direction of the franchise over the next few months.Â
When searching for a trade proposal, Sports Illustrated recently suggested a deal that would send five Yankees prospects to Arizona in return for three big league players, a deal New York would likely jump on.Â
âArizona Diamondbacks receive Yankees No. 10 prospect and right-hander Cam Schlittler, No. 12 prospect and outfielder Everson Pereira, No. 20 prospect and right-hander Clayton Beeter, No. 21 prospect and right-hander Eric Reyzelman along with No. 27 prospect and outfielder Francisco Vilorio.
âNew York Yankees receive third baseman Eugenio Suárez, right-hander Merrill Kelly and left-hander Jalen Beeks.
âThe Diamondbacks may want higher quality prospects in the trade because they are giving up three MLB level players. But Schlittler just made his MLB debut, so he could be losing his prospect status in the coming weeks. Suárez, Kelly and Beeks are all on expiring contracts as well. So, it’s worth wondering how much the Yankees are willing to give up for rental players.
âThere’s little doubt, though, that Suárez would be a huge boost for the Yankees lineup. The third baseman leads the National League with 35 home runs and 85 RBI this season. He is also slashing .257/.328/.601 with 63 runs as well,â they wrote.
Which Prospects Should the Yankees Be Hesitant to Give Up?
Schlittler would be the toughest player for the New York Yankees to give up. He recently made his Major League Baseball debut and proved that he has above-average stuff.Â
However, from the Arizona Diamondbacks’ point of view, there wouldn’t be much of a reason to take this deal unless he’s involved, and one could strongly argue that this also wouldn’t get it done.Â
According to the Yankees’ Spanish radio broadcaster, Ricky Ricardo, the Yankees have a deal out for Suarez, Kelly, and Beeks. He later noted that George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones aren’t involved in the trade.Â
“There’s a proposal on the table…5 Yankees prospects, not Lombard, not Jones. 5 prospects including Schlittler to the Diamondbacks for Merrill Kelly, Eugenio Suarez, and Jalen Beeks,â he said.
Is the Haul Worth It for Suarez and Kelly?
Suarez has 36 home runs this season and has arguably been the top power hitter in Major League Baseball outside of Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh.Â
There’s a good chance, however, that the New York Yankees will have to part ways with more in this type of trade.Â
The Arizona Diamondbacks don’t have much of a reason to trade anyone until the final day of the deadline, hoping to get the best package.Â
Many don’t believe the Yankees will make Lombard available. Some think he’s one of the top prospects in Major League Baseball, and all rankings indicate that.Â
He recently impressed at the MLB Future Stars game, with Baseball America naming him the best player at the event.Â
âJosue De Paula had the best hitting performance and won MVP for his game-winning home run, but Lombard was the best all-around player in the game. He made several heady plays in the field, showing range as well. At the plate, he went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Lombardâs double was hit 104.4 mph off Trent Harris, while he drew a walk in his first at-bat against Marlins LHP Thomas White,â they wrote.
