The New York Yankees will improve at the trade deadline, but it’s a matter of who they land with. The Yankees need pitching, and they could be keen on adding somebody like Freddy Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers.Â
Some have suggested the Yankees wonât pursue a starter, given how strong their rotation has looked to start the year, but with everything they’ve dealt with in recent months and years, itâs hard to justify standing pat.
Injuries have derailed the Yankees, so they must add reinforcements if they want to stay healthy on the mound heading into the second half of the campaign.
When recently looking at trade candidates around Major League Baseball and linking them to teams, CBS Sports provided a potential trade idea for the Yankees to land Peralta, adding that if the Brewers aren’t in contention by then and given their past decisions, it’s possible that he could be a fit for a few teams around the league.Â
âWhile conventional wisdom suggests Peralta, the best starter on a playoff-caliber team, should remain in place, I think there’s reason to include him, if only just in case. Peralta’s name has populated the rumor mill dating back to the offseason before last, when the Brewers traded Corbin Burnes.Â
âHe’s now under contract for just one more season, suggesting a move is probably coming at some point before Opening Day 2026… Given the expected state of the market, Peralta could be the top available starter, creating the possibility that the Brewers could leverage other clubs to net an impressive return. I don’t think a trade is a given, and truth told I’d prefer the Brewers keep Peralta and try to win a title. If you squint, though, you can see the stars coming into alignment on this one,â they wrote.
Will Yankees Make Move for Freddy Peralta?
CBS Sports wasn’t the only one to link the New York Yankees to the right-hander, as Mark Feinsand of MLB.com also had them as potential fits for his services.Â
He also noted that the Milwaukee Brewers haven’t been willing to hand out big deals in recent years, and they typically want to trade players who are nearing free agency.Â
Peralta only has one more year on his contract after this season, which is a club option, so there’s a possibility that the Yankees and others could be interested in trading for him.Â
“Like the Rays, the Brewers have a history of dealing players as they get closer to free agency (see Josh Hader, Corbin Burnes and Devin Williams), though trading Peralta would be a bold move given that Milwaukee sits only 1 1/2 games out of a Wild Card spot,” he wrote.
“Still, with an $8 million salary in 2025 and an $8 million club option for 2026, Peralta would surely draw interest from teams looking for controllable pitching, which is always a popular target around the Trade Deadline,” Feinsand continued.
Do Yankees Have Farm System to Make Trade?
The only question the New York Yankees must consider is whether they have a sound enough farm system to trade for him.Â
According to MLB.com, the Yankees currently have the 24th-ranked farm system, much worse than their 2024 preseason rank, which came in at No. 11.Â
Unless the Yankees are willing to part ways with guys like Spencer Jones, George Lombard Jr., and a few others, they likely won’t have enough to land a starter like Peralta.
