At this point, the issue of the New York Yankees needing more starting pitching is becoming more urgent, especially after the recent news that Tatsuya Imai is signing with the Houston Astros.
All the other AL East teams (Red Sox, Blue Jays, Orioles) have strong frontline starters, and the Yankees do as well, but it might take until May or June to see that rotation be totally healthy. At this moment, Max Fried will certainly be the ace until Gerrit Cole returns, but then the second option becomes Cam Schlittler, who has made just 14 MLB starts. However, a recent prediction has the Yankees making a big splash for Milwaukee Brewers‘ starter Freddy Peralta.

Yankees Trading for Freddy Peralta Would be a Massive Move
The New York Yankees trading for Freddy Peralta would be a massive offseason move. Peralta is fresh off his best season in MLB, where he posted a 2.70 ERA over 176.2 innings and recorded another 200-strikeout season.
Peralta now has three straight seasons of punching out at least 200 batters, and his swing-and-miss ability was rewarded this past season when Freddy Peralta was named to his second All-Star team.
In a recent prediction piece by Newsweek sports writer Zach Pressnell, the Yankees are predicted to land Freddy Peralta in a trade:

“Prediction: Yankees acquire Brewers ace Freddy Peralta after missing out on Tatsuya Imai”
“The Yankees should be calling the Milwaukee Brewers and asking about Freddy Peralta if they haven’t done so already. Peralta is one of the best pitchers in baseball right now, and he’s found himself on the trade block because of his expiring contract.”
Freddy Peralta’s Contract Makes Him an Attractive Target
Because Freddy Peralta is on an expiring contract, as Pressnell indicated, he’s become the subject of offseason trade rumors. This is also partly due to the fact that the Milwaukee Brewers are known for moving off their star pitchers before having to extend them a lucrative contract (most recently, Corbin Burnes).
If the Brewers suddenly become open to moving off Peralta and being open to trading him, this becomes a fascinating storyline in MLB.
Peralta has blossomed into one of the game’s best starters and would immediately make up for what the Yankees have lost this offseason (Devin Williams, Luke Weaver).
He is also still 29, which makes Peralta in the prime of his career, and he already has a plethora of big-league experience.
Pressnell indicates later in his article that the Brewers would likely ask for an MLB-ready arm like Will Warren and a few Yankees prospects, which feels like the right value for a deal of these implications.
Regardless of the speculation around a massive offseason trade idea like this, the Yankees do need to get going this offseason and certainly acquire a starter in some way. Other division rivals are adding formidable arms left and right, and it’s time New York starts to flex their checkbook a little bit.
