Bears coach Ben Johnson didn’t sound too concerned about the “Tush Push” hours after the Eagles’ patented quarterback sneak survived an attempt to ban it at the owners’ meeting in Minnesota.
“Does it become an explosive play ever? Have you ever seen it become an explosive play?” Johnson said with a smile after the Bears’ second OTA practice of the season Wednesday. “I like explosive plays. I like big plays. I’m not a big ’Tush Push’ guy myself.”
Those comments will certainly be revisited if Johnson’s Bears struggle in short yardage — and when they play the Eagles on “Black Friday.” Since 2022, the Eagles have run the play 108 times and the Bills 55, per ESPN research. The Bears actually rank third — with only 16 — albeit as a remnant of the Justin Fields era.
The Bears consider the “Tush Push” an “inherently unsafe play,” chairman George McCaskey said in March. They were in support of the ban.
Nonetheless, the “Tush Push” is sticking around.
“You have to stop it,” Bears defensive tackle Grady Jarrett said. “It’s been stopped before. Not at a high rate. But don’t let them get third-and-1, fourth-and-1. You know what’s coming.
“I’ve played Philly a lot of times, they are a tough group. They have a combination of players and the quarterback that makes it successful. … The rules are the rules. You have to find a way to stop it.”
