Ever since the Toronto Blue Jays lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, they’ve been making moves left, right, and center. Yes, they have brought in Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and Tyler Rogers from MLB free agency. They have also been active on the prospects and depth front. From a 6-foot-6 lefty pitching prospect to a relatively unknown catcher, to Geovanny Planchart, they have added a variety of depth to the organization.
Every Blue Jays fan is waiting for good news on the Bo Bichette-Kyle Tucker front. While those decisions might have to wait until Christmas (or most likely after), Toronto looks to explore trade possibilities for relievers.
However, there has been a new depth signing to the organization in Planchart. He could be an intriguing piece with a particular strength.
Toronto Blue Jays Sign Geovanny Planchart
According to the Blue Jays’ transaction page, they signed catcher Planchart to a minor league deal on December 16th. That was the same day that they DFA’d Justin Bruihl, who they traded a day later.
Planchart most recently played in the Pittsburgh Pirates system in 2025. The 24-year-old, 6-foot-2 catcher played A+ for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. In 2025, he landed 29 hits, three home runs, 18 RBIs, and scored 21 runs in 150 at-bats.
While those numbers might not exude confidence, another stat sticks out. Planchart drew 23 walks in 2025.
Planchart drew the ninth-most walks out of all players on the Grasshoppers who had 100 at-bats or more. However, when you factor in volume and just look at the percentages, his unique talent emerges.
Planchart’s Unique Talents
He was second on his team with a .676 walk-to-strikeout ratio (BB/K). The top-ranked player in this metric had 42 plate appearances to Planchart’s 179.
Additionally, his .128 walk percentage was fifth-best on the team. Of his teammates who had 100 or more plate appearances, Planchart had the second-best strikeout percentage of .190.
While he doesn’t have the hitting numbers or power potential of the league’s best prospects, his eye for pitches is hard to ignore. Coincidentally, this leads to his impressive defensive skills.
“Planchart is known for his aggressive playing style and exceptional defensive skills. As a catcher, he’s praised for his quick reflexes and strong arm, making him a formidable presence behind the plate,” reads one scouting report on the catcher.
New Blue Jays Trade Target Emerges
When it comes to the Blue Jays’ bullpen, there is a sense that they are not done making moves. After signing reliever Jorge Alcala on December 18th, they may look to a trade to strengthen their bullpen further.
Mitch Bannon of The Athletic suggested that they could take from a positional surplus to add another reliever.
“They’ve already traded away Justin Bruihl to the Cleveland Guardians for cash and could use an excess of outfielders to add another arm,” Bannon wrote on December 19, 2025.
So who might the Blue Jays look at to further strengthen this area? Two options stand out in Matt Strahm and Trevor Megill.
Trevor Megill & Matt Strahm
Strahm was recently tabbed as a potential trade chip by Jeff Passan.
“An array of left-handers, from Sean Newcomb to Taylor Rogers to Danny Coulombe, could be snatched up soon,” Passan wrote on December 18th. “Though the best available one is Matt Strahm, who is likely to be traded by Philadelphia.”
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Milwaukee Brewers aren’t just getting calls about Freddy Peralta.
“Yes, the Brewers are open for business on starter Freddy Peralta if a suitor is willing to meet a steep price for their ace,” Sherman wrote on December 8th, 2025. “But they are getting calls from even more teams about reliever Trevor Megill, including from both the Mets and Yankees.”
It’s not surprising to see the New York Mets and the New York Yankees sniffing around a reliever. At the same time, they have both been linked to Peralta, so the interest makes sense.
While the Blue Jays haven’t been linked to either player at this point in time, Megill and Strahm both make sense as targets. Megill earned 30 saves in 50 games while throwing 60 strikeouts. On the other hand, Strahm earned 22 holds and six saves in 66 games. Strahm also threw 70 strikeouts.
There is no telling if the Blue Jays will swing a trade to bring in another arm or stick with the already crowded bullpen they have. One thing is certain: they are not done making moves this winter.
