A 9-year-old boy fell down a flight of stairs and fractured his skull Sunday morning after he got caught up in a fight at the CTA’s Green Line, according to Chicago police.
Surveillance video shows the boy exit a Green Line train with a 22-year-old man who was arguing with two other men around 11:15 a.m., according to an initial police report obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
As the argument turned physical, the 22-year-old and child ran from the Clinton station platform, 540 W. Lake St. The man scooped up the 9-year-old “as he was not keeping up,” according to the police report.
As they went down the stairs, one of the two suspects struck the 22-year-old in the back with an object, causing him and the child to fall down the flight of stairs, police said in a statement Monday. The 22-year-old landed on top of the 9-year-old, who then fell unconscious, according to the police report.
The two suspects fled the station and have not been arrested, police said Monday.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old picked up the child again and boarded another train headed to the Loop, the report states. They exited at the Clark and Lake station, where the man borrowed a phone, called 911 and said the child “fell down,” according to the police report.
The 22-year-old left before paramedics arrived but showed up later at Lurie Children’s Hospital, where police arrested him on an outstanding warrant, according to the police report. Police said the child was listed in critical condition.
Court records show the man had skipped court dates for a misdemeanor retail theft case in Lake County, Illinois.
