Just ahead of their Week 7 game against the Commanders, the Dallas Cowboys finally get some good news on the injury front for their defense. Second-year CB Caelen Carson, a former fifth-round pick out of Wake Forest, was activated off of Injured Reserve (IR) on Saturday, according to Aaron Wilson. He is officially listed as questionable heading into Sunday’s game.
The news comes on the heels of star CB Trevon Diggs’ own injury. Per ESPN’s Todd Archer, Diggs is out for the Commanders game after suffering an accident at his home on Thursday that landed him in the concussion protocol. While Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer didn’t know the specifics of what happened during his press conference on Friday, he did confirm that Diggs was being evaluated by the team’s medical staff and he has since been ruled out.
Carson played in six games as a rookie, totaling 27 tackles and four passes defensed. He made several starts down the stretch of the season as Dallas suffered a boatload of injuries at the cornerback position. In training camp, Carson hyperextended his knee, and he’s been on IR ever since. It remains to be seen if he’ll make his season debut today.
The Dallas Cowboys Are Still Dealing with a Rash of Injuries

Getting Carson back, whether that’s this week or next, in undoubtedly a boost for this defense. Losing Diggs against the Commanders hurts, but his absence shouldn’t be an extended one. Still, these are hardly the only injuries Dallas is trying to overcome.
Star WR CeeDee Lamb has been out for several weeks with a high-ankle sprain, though he too will make his return against the Commanders. Starting C Cooper Beebe is on IR, as are starting S Malik Hooker, WR Jonathan Mingo, DT Perrion Winfrey, and ED Payton Turner. LB DeMarvion Overshown and rookie CB Shavon Revel Jr. have yet to make their season debuts, both recovering from serious injuries sustained last season.
Guys like CB DaRon Bland, LT Tyler Guyton, WR KaVontae Turpin, RG Tyler Booker, and ED Marshawn Kneeland have been banged up to varying degrees this season, some missing games with their ailments. For all the roster construction concerns with this team, they have been hit hard by injuries as well.
This Season is on the Precipice for the Dallas Cowboys
To put it bluntly, it hasn’t been a great start to the season for Dallas. After losing a heartbreaker in Philadelphia to open the year and winning in overtime against the Giants the following week, the Cowboys have won just one of their last four games, including losses to the Panthers and Bears in that span.
They did manage to tie the Packers in an emotional Week 4 game, but wins have been hard to come by for this group. With the Commanders, Broncos, and Cardinals on deck, their schedule only gets harder from here. Can the Cowboys rebound and make a playoff push as we approach the midway point of the season?
