Giants Predicted to Add Talented, but Injury-Prone WR After Jets Swap

It’s been more than 60 years since the New York Giants picked first overall in the NFL Draft, and if Mike Renner of CBS Sports is correct, that streak will continue beyond 2026.

Renner predicted the Giants to trade out of the first overall selection with their MetLife Stadium cohabitants, the New York Jets, and take Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson in his most recent mock draft.

Despite ending up with Eli Manning, who was the top pick in the 2004 NFL Draft, the Giants of course selected Philip Rivers with the fourth pick then swapped him for Manning that year.

New York has picked in the top-5 eight times since 1980 and four times since 2018. But its last No. 1 overall selection came in 1965 when New York chose running back Tucker Fredrickson of Auburn.

The Giants Are Likely To Trade Their First-Round Pick

The Giants (2-12) are currently locked into the top pick with three weeks to go. But with a quarterback-heavy draft ahead, and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart looking like the real deal, the Giants are likely to be inclined to trade back with a quarterback-needy team like the Jets.

Of course, the Giants have an abundance of needs outside of quarterback, so they’ll want draft capital too — especially from a team that is also picking near the top of the draft.

The Jets (3-11) are currently locked into the fourth overall selection, but they are likely to target Indiana quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza in the first round.

But with the Las Vegas Raiders (2-12) slated to select after the Giants at No. 2, the Jets would need to part with a two more first-round picks to make the deal happen. The deal would hop the Jets over the Raiders and the Tennessee Titans, who also don’t need a QB after selecting Cam Ward first overall in April.

“With the Giants and Titans seemingly out on drafting a quarterback while holding two of the top three picks, expect one — or both — of those selections to be auctioned off to the highest bidder,” Renner wrote. “The Jets trade up to No. 1 with the Giants, giving up both first-round picks this year (Nos. 5 and 18) and their lowest first-round pick in 2027.”

Jordyn Tyson Is Talented, Albeit Oft-Injured

According to Renner, the Giants would use the No. 4 pick to choose Tyson, a 6-2, 195-pound AP All-American, to complement Malik Nabers and slot receiver Wan’Dale Robinson.

“Jaxson Dart goes from having scant receiving options to arguably the most fully loaded receiving corps in the NFL with this pick,” Renner wrote. “Tyson is a crafty, all-around route runner who creates more space for himself than anyone in the class. His only concern is his injury history that’s caused him to miss time in three straight seasons.”

But that injury history may be cause for pause for Giants fans, especially after they watched Nabers lose all but three games this year to a torn ACL. Tyson blew out his knee at Colorado in 2022, which caused him to redshirt his first year at ASU, had a serious collarbone injury in 2024 and dealt with a nagging hamstring ailment this season.

Still, Tyson had 136 catches in 24 games at ASU, and with a glaring hole at the No. 2 wide-receiver spot — plus he was Cam Skattebo’s teammate in the desert — the Giants could do worse, especially while acquiring future draft capital from the Jets.
