IDOT is hiring snowplow drivers

The Illinois Department of Transportation is looking for snowplow drivers.

IDOT is accepting applications for temporary full-time and hourly on-call positions, to help with the seasonal snow and ice removal across the state as part of its annual “Snowbird” program, which is what the department calls snowplow drivers.

“Both full-time temporary and hourly on-call positions are being filled to help maintain more than 45,000 lane miles statewide during winter. Snowbirds are required to promptly respond to emerging weather situations for snow and ice removal and be ready to work in emergency conditions at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays,” IDOT said in a statement.

Salaries for full-time temporary positions start at $6,044 per month. The hourly rate is set at $27.79 an hour.

“Snowbirds play a critical role in keeping Illinois moving and the public safe during winter,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi, as part of the statement. “If you’re interested in a good-paying job that can open the door to permanent work and a career at IDOT, get your application in today!”

Applicants are required to have a Class A or B commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements to include X or N and no air brake restrictions.

A pre-employment physical and vision test, drug and alcohol screening, and a criminal background check are required for the position. Veterans are encouraged to apply, the statement said.

Applications are due by Friday at https://illinois.jobs2web.com.
