Meghan Trainor has played to sold-out crowds and topped music charts around the world, but the Grammy Award-winning singer says her latest role might top them all: starring alongside Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes in a new State Farm commercial.
The pop star, best known for her 2014 hit “All About That Bass,” called the ad “the highlight of my career.”
“I called my family first and told them, ‘Guess what, I booked the most iconic commercial there ever was,’” Trainor told Heavy Sports in an exclusive interview at The Ground in New York City on Aug. 20. “When they guessed State Farm, I said, ‘Yes, but not only that — it’s me and Pat Mahomes.’”
Trainor vs. Chief’s Trainer

State FarmKansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes shares a selfie with Grammy Award-winning singer Meghan Trainor and “Jake From State Farm.”
The commercial continues State Farm’s long-running strategy of pairing cultural figures with sports stars, leaning on humor and relatability to connect with fans. This latest 30-second spot builds on past concepts such as the Bateman vs. Batman campaign, with Trainor jokingly pitted against Mahomes’ real trainer.
“They’re talking about how you don’t settle with this pop-star trainer when you can have Pat Mahomes’ legit trainer,” Trainor said. “The whole idea is not to settle for any insurance when you can have State Farm. We were all laughing, saying how brilliant it was. I’m so glad people used my name and let me dance and be funny in a commercial. It’s the coolest thing I’ve ever been part of.”
For Trainor, who grew up in Massachusetts playing youth football with her brothers and rooting for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, the project was more than another gig. It was a full-circle moment that brought her love of music together with the sport she grew up around.
“My brothers couldn’t believe it,” she said. “They were like, ‘You’re gonna be the coolest girl ever.’ It felt like when ‘All About That Bass’ first came out, and all their friends in high school called them saying, ‘How did your sister do that?’”
The spot also features “Jake from State Farm” and Chiefs athletic trainer Julie Frymyer, and plays off Mahomes’ use of a knee brace. Trainor’s breakout hit is reimagined as “All About That Brace,” a playful nod to the protective gear the quarterback wore during Kansas City’s 2019-20 Super Bowl run.
‘Nice and Lovely’
Trainor brought her eldest son and one of her brothers to the shoot. Both, she said, were starstruck by Mahomes, who she found as approachable as fans might hope.
“He was so nice and so lovely,” she said. “I didn’t know what to expect, but he was sweet and giggly. My goal was to make him laugh every take — and I did. The whole room was giggling. Making him giggle was like the highlight of my career.”
Mahomes, already one of the NFL’s most marketable stars with endorsement deals ranging from Adidas to Oakley, had just a few lines in the spot. Still, Trainor said he stepped into it with ease.
“He would run with me even if I freestyled,” she recalled. “I’d be like, ‘Who are you?’ and he’d respond, ‘Pat Mahomes.’ We were really good together, and it was the best day.”
For Mahomes, the commercial adds to a growing portfolio of endorsements, while for Trainor, it was a unique opportunity to merge her music career with the sport she loves — and to share a memorable experience with her family.
And for State Farm, it’s another viral-ready moment — the kind that happens when a pop star and a Super Bowl MVP share a screen, and a laugh.
