Leeds Bradford Airport chaos as runway closes with flights diverted due to ’emergency’

LEEDS Bradford Airport is in chaos after the runway was shut for emergency repairs with flights being diverted.

All flights arriving and departing have been cancelled or diverted until at least 7pm tonight with the check-in closed until at least 5pm.

Leeds Bradford Airport apologised for the disruption in a statement and said the “minor repair” to the runway surface needed to be carried out immediately.

The airport said in a post on X: “The runway is currently closed due to emergency runway repairs.

“We expect to open no earlier than 19:00hrs today. Please contact your airline for further travel advice.”

In a follow-up post they advised one customer to: “Please contact your airline for travel advice. Our teams are working tirelessly to make repairs and return to normal operations.”

Flights arriving from across Europe have been diverted to East Midlands, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester. and Newcastle airports.

Meanwhile, departure boards state flights have been cancelled or more information will be provided at 4.30pm.

Three departures have been cancelled, ruining the weekend and holiday plans of flyers going to Paris, Corfu, and Belfast.

Jet2 advised one customer on social media that its teams were working on assisting affected customers.

One flyer said: “Poor Jet2 staff at Leeds Bradford have no idea what’s going on. Airport’s own website says airport closed until 7pm but the staff in the departure lounge haven’t been told a thing.”

Another flyer said: “Leeds Bradford airport runway shut nothing in or out. Not a single rep to be seen.”

Yesterday a flight was forced to abandon a landing after strong winds hit the airport, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported.

Video showed the flight struggling to cope with the gusts as it came into land, before abandoning the attempt.
