The Los Angeles Lakers belong to Luka Doncic, making LeBron James the best second option in the entire NBA. Heading into his 23rd NBA season, perhaps his last, James is still an excellent player. His ability to take over games remains top-notch, but his game-by-game durability can be questioned.
Fortunately for the Lakers, Austin Reaves is the very best third option in the NBA. He averaged 20.2 points per game last season and can excel in both guard spots. However, in the playoffs, his production dropped by four points, and his outside shooting efficiency tanked.
In his defense, he had to face off against some of the best defenders in the NBA, namely Jaden McDaniels. Solid defense isn’t unique to the Minnesota Timberwolves, however, and Reaves’ scoring needs to be more consistent.

Lakers Need More Dominance from Austin Reaves
In the playoffs, fans can expect Doncic and James to command most of the defensive attention. That means tertiary scorers like Reaves and Deandre Ayton will need to consistently make shots, even if they won’t be guarded by slouches.
In five playoff games last season, Reaves spent 48 minutes being guarded by Anthony Edwards, Donte DiVincenzo, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. He struggled.
“Reaves is a very good player, borderline All-Star,” Richard Jefferson said on ESPN on October 7th. “But once he got against those dog defenders that you’re going to see every round of the postseason, you’re going to see dog defenders. Now, all of a sudden, Austin Reaves looked like he regressed back to a 15, 16 point a game type of player. So can he make that jump where he’s a 20-point-a-game scorer versus all of the dogs? That’s when you become a different man. And that’s what they need from him.”
James and Doncic can post great numbers against even the best defenders. That’s why they’re superstars. However, with Doncic always an injury risk and James aging, Reaves needs to be ready to play a bigger role.

Lakers Should Easily Solve Reaves’ Worries
Last season, Reaves started as the primary point guard until the Lakers traded Anthony Davis and brought in Doncic. He is a fine off-ball player, although there was likely some shock at having his role suddenly changed.
James has made it clear that he has worked on his off-ball game this summer in an effort to give Doncic more control over the offense. James’ willingness to play second fiddle should allow Reaves to thrive, as well.
If Doncic and James are both on the wings and Reaves has the ball while being guarded by the third-best defender on a playoff team, he should be able to cash in some easy buckets in isolation.
Last season, even in the playoffs, his role was not defined. After a full summer to integrate their additions, the Lakers should be able to maximize all three stars.
