The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a bit of a predicament in Week 2, as they were forced to find a new starting quarterback after Brock Purdy was ruled out for the game. Luckily, the team signed Mac Jones in free agency this offseason, and he ended up turning in a strong outing to help lead the Niners to a 26-21 victory over the New Orleans Saints.
With Purdy’s status for Week 3 still up in the air, Jones could be tasked with starting again for San Francisco in their upcoming game. Chances are, this isn’t how Jones expected his tenure with the Niners to begin, but he’s quickly found himself taking on a leadership role on offense, and that led to him recently discussing his storied history with his new teammate, defensive end Bryce Huff.
Mac Jones Dishes on Bryce Huff Relationship
In the 2021 NFL Draft, the 49ers were heavily linked to Jones, who was one of the top passers available. Instead, they opted to select Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick, and Jones fell to the New England Patriots at the No. 15 overall pick. After flaming out with the Pats, Jones spent last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars before finally linking up with head coach Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco this year.
Throughout his time with New England, Jones made his fair share of enemies on and off the field. The fanbase wasn’t too pleased with him due to his inconsistent play, and he developed a reputation for delivering dirty hits or constantly complaining to the referees. One guy he has a history with is Huff, who is now his teammate on the Niners.
With Huff spending the first four seasons of his career on the New York Jets, he and Jones frequently went up against each other. In one of their meetings, Huff was called for a roughing the passer penalty after taking down Jones, which clearly did not make him happy. When asked about that play, Jones admitted that it was a bogus penalty.
“He’s got a great get off, and he’s so quiet, so you never hear him coming, he just sends it,” Jones said of Huff on Thursday. “I remember playing against him and we were always worried about the guy on the other side, and I’m like, ‘No, we got to worry about this guy.’ He’s done a great job and a great locker room guy. Just quiet, does his job, and really love playing with him … I did get sacked (by Huff). I think they called a roughing passer, but it was not a roughing the passer.”

Nobody can go back and pick up a penalty, so Jones has no problem admitting that Huff did not deserve to get called for roughing the passer when he sacked him back in 2022. As teammates now, Jones is rooting for Huff to get all the sacks he can, and he ended up enjoying a big game against the Saints, racking up four tackles, one sack, and one fumble forced.
Purdy has returned to practice this week for the 49ers, but it remains to be seen whether or not he will end up playing in Week 3. If he can’t go, that would force Jones into action in a pretty important early-season contest against the Arizona Cardinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET, and by the time the final whistle blows, one of these two teams will have lost its first game of the new campaign.
