A man has pleaded guilty to murder charges in the shooting death of Chicago rapper Tray Savage in Chatham five years ago, according to court documents.
Demitri Jackson was sentenced to 29 years in prison as part of the plea Tuesday, which is to be served in its entirety, according to court documents.
Prosecutors didn’t offer a motive for the shooting when they charged Jackson in April 2021, saying only that he and Kentray Young, known as Tray Savage on stage, were affiliated with the same gang faction and spoke briefly 15 minutes before shots rang out around 11 a.m. June 19, 2020.
Jackson, 20, returned in a car, got out and interacted again with Young, 26, as he sat in another car with his girlfriend, before Jackson went back to his car and moved it into the middle of the street, blocking Young’s car. He then stepped out and started shooting, prosecutors said.
Hit in the neck and shoulder, the 26-year-old continued driving, striking three cars before his girlfriend rushed to the car and pulled him from the driver’s seat, Chicago police said at the time. Savage was then taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Savage was an associate of rapper Chief Keef and part of Keef’s Glo Gang collection of recording artists and was well known for his 2013 collaboration with Keef, “Chiefin Keef.”
