An estimated 500 frozen turkeys — intended to feed those in need as part of a Thanksgiving giveaway — were swiped in California.
The turkeys, all of which had been donated to local nonprofit U.R. Important, were stolen Sunday from a box truck, which authorities have been unable to locate as of Tuesday, NBC News reports.
Security footage is being reviewed as part of the investigation and efforts to find the vehicle and its contents, CBS News said.
The organization still aims to feed 200 people for the holiday, according to founder Alexxa Oliver, who told CBS she, with the help of her kids, will be going from store to store to buy turkeys to try to replace “what we can afford.”
Oliver announced the theft in a video on the foundation’s Facebook page Sunday, during which she also alerted families to Elk Lodge, which was “giving away turkeys.”
“We want to definitely apologize to all the families who are going to be hit by this, devastated by it,” Oliver continued. “This was almost 500 turkeys that we would be distributing today. And they’re all taken now. So, please, keep us in your prayers. Keep the families in your prayers.”
A generous good Samaritan, who is remaining anonymous, has also offered to help, and the organization annually receives donations from Temecula’s Abbot Laboratories, Oliver told CBS Monday.
“This is just another mountain for us to climb,” Oliver said, “and we’re gonna climb it and we’re gonna conquer it.”
