National Hurricane Center tags Invest 97-L off African coast, 80% chance for development

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring a disturbance in the eastern Atlantic, designated as Invest AL97, for a high chance of becoming the next tropical depression or storm. This system is associated with a well-defined low-pressure area and is currently producing showers and thunderstorms, which are showing signs of organization.

Forecasters believe there is a high probability of tropical cyclone formation, with a 70% chance within the next 48 hours and a 90% chance over the next seven days. The system is expected to become a tropical depression within the next day or so while it moves west-northwestward across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.

Regardless of official formation, the disturbance is already bringing locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the Cabo Verde Islands, and residents there are advised to monitor its progress. Even if a tropical depression does not form immediately, environmental conditions are favorable for later development, and a tropical depression or tropical storm is expected to form by the middle to latter part of the week.

The system is currently tracking westward to west-northwestward at a speed of 15 to 20 knots. Another disturbance, Invest AL96, is also being tracked in the central Atlantic, but its chances for development are considered low due to a less favorable environment.

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has been predicted to be above-average, and this latest development is a reminder of the heightened activity as the season approaches its peak. The NHC will continue to issue advisories and provide updates on the system’s progress.
