Netflix has now added a movie that fans have said is ‘one of the sweetest and most touching’ they’ve ever seen despite its ‘preposterous’ concept.
Released in 2021, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a mixed live-action and stop-motion animated mockumentary film.
Based on the series of Marcel the Shell shorts written by Jenny Slate and Fleischer Camp, it follows Marcel (voiced by Slate), a shell who lives with his grandmother, Connie and pet lint ball, Alan.
But after filmmaker Dean (Fleischer Camp) movies into the Air BnB in which the trio live and decides to make a film about Marcel, he becomes an online sensation and amasses millions of adoring fans.
His newfound fame is then utilised to help Marcel reunite with his long-lost family.
The movie was critically acclaimed, being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2023 and also currently holds a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Reviews from both critics and fans over the years since its release have been glowing.
‘An entirely preposterous concept, which somehow becomes one of the sweetest and most touching movies I have ever seen,’ Charvine posted.
‘It’s nearly impossible not to love this film. Full of heart, joy and humour! It is highly recommended,’ Brian shared.
‘This was a beautiful movie that our whole family from 8 to 80 was engaged and watching the entire time. Everyone was engaged and enjoyed it the entire time…although there were a few tears from the littlest one during the end. The concept was so clever,’ Jennifer added.

Others called it ‘a little gem of a film’.
After seeing it had been released on Netflix, Amy urged others to tune in: ‘Just saw that Marcel the Shell with Shoes on is on Netflix, and it is a MUST WATCH.’
Speaking about the poignancy of the movie, Fleischer Camp said what resonated for the creators and viewers was how the character was a ‘small soul in an outsized world’.
‘Everyone can relate to feeling like, “I live in a world that wasn’t made for me”. We know that feeling from childhood, but then most people I know grew up and felt like, “Oh, no. I still exist in a world that wasn’t made for me”. And Marcel isn’t self-pitying because of that. Obstacles are constantly in his way, but he knows, I’m going to overcome this like I overcame the last one, and like I’ll have to overcome the one tomorrow. He doesn’t feel small even when he obviously is,’ he explained in an interview with the Academy.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is streaming on Netflix.
