NFL Scout Compares Vikings’ Max Brosmer to $265 Million Quarterback

The 2025 campaign has not gone according to plan for the Minnesota Vikings. After turning the starting quarterback job over to J.J. McCarthy, the Vikings have struggled mightily on offense. McCarthy has also been unable to keep himself on the field, as he’s dealt with several injuries that have limited him to just six games so far this season.

The latest ailment for McCarthy is a concussion he suffered in the team’s Week 12 loss to the Green Bay Packers. As a result, undrafted rookie Max Brosmer is set to get the first start of his career in Week 13, and ahead of this big game, he received a unique comparison to San Francisco 49ers‘ star quarterback Brock Purdy.

Max Brosmer Compared to Brock Purdy Before First NFL Start

McCarthy’s career in the NFL hasn’t exactly gotten off to a great start. After getting selected with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, McCarthy missed his entire rookie season with a torn meniscus. And while he’s played in 2025, he has been historically bad for Minnesota, leading to serious questions emerging about his future with the team.

The Vikings aren’t going to give up on McCarthy just yet, but his latest injury gives the team an opportunity to see what it has in Brosmer. While he was not exactly a hyped prospect coming out of college, Brosmer flashed his potential over the summer during training camp and preseason action, which led to him sticking around as the team’s No. 3 quarterback behind McCarthy and Carson Wentz, who is out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

Now that McCarthy is out again, that leaves Brosmer with an opportunity to not just show what he’s capable of, but potentially make Minnesota’s starting quarterback job his own. If he needs inspiration, he should look no further than Purdy, an unheralded 2022 seventh-round pick who stole the Niners’ starting quarterback gig from Trey Lance, who was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

“He’s not flashy, but neither was Brock Purdy when he first got tossed into the fire for the 49ers and won the job,” an NFL scout said of Brosmer, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Expectations for Brosmer shouldn’t exactly be high, but realistically speaking, he cannot be much worse than McCarthy. In six games this season, McCarthy has thrown for just 929 yards and six touchdowns, while also tossing 10 interceptions. A Vikings offense that is full of weapons has looked desolate, and it’s led to a very disappointing 2025 campaign.

As if things weren’t already going to be difficult enough for Brosmer, he will be going up against a dangerous Seattle Seahawks team in Week 13. Coincidentally, the Seahawks are led by Sam Darnold, who helped take Minnesota to the postseason in 2024 during his long year as the team’s starting quarterback. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET on Sunday, and all eyes will be on Brosmer to see what he can do for the Vikings’ offense.
