Off-duty Chicago police officer exchanges fire with several gunmen in New City

An off-duty Chicago police officer exchanged shots with “multiple” gunmen early Sunday in the New City neighborhood, Chicago police said.


The officer was confronted by the armed group around 6 a.m. in the 4800 block of South Bishop Street, according to police.

After the shots were fired, the group fled in a white sedan. The officer suffered minor injuries from broken glass and was taken to a nearby hospital.

No other injuries have been reported, police said.

No one is in custody. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the incident, and the officer has been placed on administrative duties for at least 30 days per department policy.
