Taye Diggs Opens Up About Sister’s Brave Journey With Schizophrenia

Taye Diggs is opening up about his sister’s health in order to advocate for others who are navigating similar challenges. The “RENT” actor recently spoke to PEOPLE, sharing how caring for his sister, Christian Diggs, who lives with schizophrenia, changed his perspective on relationships and life.

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental health disorder that can cause delusions, hallucinations, and, at times, disorganized thinking. According to the Mayo Clinic, it affects approximately 24 million people worldwide and 3 million in the United States. The disorder typically requires lifelong treatment, but there are support systems that can significantly improve quality of life.

Despite her diagnosis, Diggs happily said Christian is still the same person she was when they were growing up. “You just have to make some adjustments and really support and try to kind of step out of your own perspective and not be afraid to be there,” he told the outlet.

Learning Through Fear and Connection

When Christina was diagnosed in her twenties, Diggs was 49 years old. He admitted to initially stepping back out of fear and confusion, unsure of what schizophrenia actually entailed. Relying on assumptions and hearsay, along with what he had seen in films, he didn’t know how to help. Over time, however, he realized those assumptions were wrong and decided to do what he could to support her.

“When we grew up, we were very, very close,” he said. “We had a wonderful relationship, but when she started her twenties, that’s when her behavior started to change. The reports I was getting from other family members — because I was away working — were quite frightening, and I had no idea how to deal with it.”

He continued, “All of a sudden, all of these crazy things were happening to her. Luckily, we found her a solid therapist who had the tools to lead us to her diagnosis. And then there was a feeling of relief, because we could actually put a name to what was going on with her.”

Advocacy Through the Live You PosSCZible Campaign

To help others who may be in the same position he once was, Diggs has teamed up with his sister to support the Live You PosSCZible campaign in partnership with Bristol Myers Squibb. The initiative offers resources and support for those affected by schizophrenia while also encouraging and celebrating individuals living with the condition.

Together, the siblings co-hosted a talent showcase to help those living with schizophrenia feel seen and heard. “There were so many moments when she felt completely alone,” Diggs said. “The more she sees that other people are in a similar situation and having similar struggles — but at the same time, doing so well and thriving — that’s so great to see.”

He emphasized the importance of community and knowledge. “These are places you can go where you can find a community for other people who are going through the same thing and doing the research. Getting over my fear and engaging with my sister and learning more about what she was going through made me realize that her life didn’t have to stop. And I didn’t have to stop being a part of her life. That was, and continues to be, very encouraging,” he said.

Changing the Stigma Around Schizophrenia

Diggs had spoken publicly about the misconceptions surrounding schizophrenia back in 2024. In an interview with CBS, he explained that many people at times don’t fully understand the disorder. It’s often mischaracterized as someone “losing their mind” or having “split personalities,” but in reality, it presents in various forms and at different stages.

“I didn’t know if she was going to be able to hold down a steady job. If she could be in a relationship and have kids,” Diggs told CBS News. “But once Christian got with a good psychiatrist and found her right meds, it was the exact opposite.”

Now, Diggs is committed to shifting the narrative around schizophrenia, as well as mental health. He continues to speak openly about his sister’s journey and the strength she has shown in building a fulfilling life.

“It’s in no way an easy thing to deal with,” he said. “But it’s not the end of the world by a longshot.”
