Tom Cruise Details Life-Risking ‘Mission: Impossible’ Stunts: ‘It Takes Your Breath Away’

Tom Cruise fans know that he performs the majority of his stunts for his films, and “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is no different.

In an interview with People published on May 1, Cruise opened up about the breathtaking feats he performed, such as climbing buildings and hanging off a flying plane.

“I remember seeing old footage of wing-walking. Those aircraft were only traveling at, I don’t know, 40, 50 miles an hour,” he said.

Cruise continued, “This aircraft is up to over 120 miles an hour. Going out there, I was realizing that it takes your breath away.”

The film’s stunt coordinator, Wade Eastwood, added, “Everyone will think we did some on green screen on the ground. I guarantee there was not one single shot that was not on a plane flying for real.”

The movie also features a submarine scene, which was carried out in a huge man-made tank, with Cruise wearing a diving mask.

“You’re not going to feel as connected with the character if I went with a regular mask and a thing in my mouth to breathe,” he told People.

Cruise continued, “Luckily, when you’re flying jets you train for hypoxia and for carbon dioxide buildup. You start to be able to perceive your body and how it’s reacting so that I knew when to stop.”

Cruise Passed Out While Filming ‘Final Reckoning’

“Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” has Cruise hanging off the wing of a plane that flies 10,000 feet above ground.

The Ethan Hunt portrayer told Empire in February that filming that scene caused him to lose consciousness.

“When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen,” he said.

“So I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit,” Cruise revealed.

Cruise Reportedly Hired a Body Double For a ‘Final Reckoning’ Scene

Cruise may be a daredevil when it comes to his movie stunts, but according to the Mirror, he hired a body double to flip a piece of paper.

“Tom is known for doing his own stunts, like hanging off the side of a plane or skydiving. But they had a body double stand in for turning a page,” a source told the publication.

The insider explained, “It was to give run-down Tom a break — he’s been working so hard to get the film finished. But I’m not sure how turning a page would have added to that.”
