The Miami Dolphins have won four straight games, and their running game has been the reason for their winning formula. This has led to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa throwing the ball less than he has in years past. During his press conference, Tagovailoa addressed the topic and said, “Would I like to throw it more? Sure. But we are winning with running the ball.”
The Dolphins quarterback did add that he’s happy as long as the team is getting wins and that “if running the ball is helping us win games, I don’t see why we stop doing it.”
Tua Tagovailoa’s Season

In the Dolphins’ four game winning streak, Tagovailoa has not thrown for over 200 yards. On the year, he’s currently averaging 185.2 passing yards per game, a figure that would be his lowest since his rookie season. Under Mike McDaniel, Tua has not had any year in which he finished with less than 260 passing yards per game. He’s only surpassed that figure in two games this year, both of which the Dolphins lost.
Despite the lack of yardage in the passing game, turnovers have been an issue for the Miami quarterback. He’s currently tied with Geno Smith for the most interceptions in the NFL. His 14 interceptions have already matched the most in any season for him, and there’s still four games left to play.
Tagovailoa was asked whether the absence of wide receiver Tyreek Hill was a factor in his decline, but the Miami Dolphins quarterback refused to use that as an excuse. After 13 games, Tua has the lowest quarterback rating and QBR of his career. Miami has been winning games recently, but the quarterback has not been the biggest reason why.
Tua understandably wants to throw the ball more, but it’s difficult to envision that happening when the results haven’t been there for the quarterback. The Dolphins are winning, and taking the ball out of his hands has been a big reason why.

After the disappointing season by Tua Tagovailoa, many Dolphins fans want to move on. He’s become a problem for the offense, but for Miami, moving on from him may not be a simple task. His play this year has likely diminished any trade value he had coming into the year, which was already diminished due to his injury history. Additionally, his contract isn’t one many teams would like to take on.
The Dolphins quarterback currently carries a $56 million cap hit in the 2026 season, a figure that would likely mean Miami having to give up draft capital for a team to absorb it. If the Dolphins finish out the year strong, the possibility of Mike McDaniel and Tua Tagovailoa returning for one more season can’t be ruled out.
Selling the Dolphins fanbase on another year of Tua will be a tough task. As mentioned before, his play has declined and there’s been no sign of that improving. An offseason filled with difficult decisions is likely to follow for Miami as they may head into a transition period.
