Yankees Await Update After ‘Outstanding’ Outfielder Injured in Tough Loss

The New York Yankees are in wait-and-see-mode on Trent Grisham.

The veteran outfielder departed Monday’s 5-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays after four innings because of a tight left hamstring.

“We’ll see what it looks like tomorrow,” manager Aaron Boone told reporters postgame, via the Associated Press. “Obviously, he’s been an outstanding, valuable, two-way player for us all year.”

Grisham, 28, who went 1-for-2 at the plate before exiting, told reporters his hamstring tightened when breaking on a hit in the bottom of the fourth.

He was not listed in Tuesday’s lineup for Canada Day.

“My foot kind of got caught up underneath me in a weird spot,” Grisham said via the AP. “I told Boonie and felt like it was just smarter to see what happens.”

Trent Grisham Has Enjoyed Bounceback Season

After hitting just .190 in his first season in New York, Grisham has bounced back to grab an everyday role. He is slashing .246/.348/.467 with 15 home runs and 32 RBI in 72 games. Eleven of those homers have either tied the game or given the Yankees the lead, proving his ability to hit in the clutch.

Grisham was replaced defensively in left field by Jasson Dominguez, while Cody Bellinger shifted to center.

The Blue Jays wound up scoring four times in the sixth, with help from a two-run single by first baseman Vlad Guerrero Jr., and held on to beat the Yankees for the first time in four tries this season.

New York still leads the American League East at 48-36 but has seen its lead over the Tampa Bay Rays (47-38) shrink to just 1.5 games.

How Would Trent Grisham’s Absence Affect the Yankees?

The Yankees reconfigured their lineup without Grisham, elevating first baseman Paul Goldschmidt back into the leadoff role and starting Dominguez again in left field, with the former Gold Glover Bellinger in center.

Grisham’s presence atop the Yankees’ lineup may be missed. He’s gotten on base at the highest clip (.348) since 2020, his second season in the major leagues.

Furthermore, Grisham has scored at least one run in six of his last nine games, and his 41 runs are tied for third on the team behind Aaron Judge (73) and Goldschmidt (49).

While the Yankees struggled at the plate last month, managing just six runs during a six-game losing streak from June 13-18, they still lead the AL in scoring and are hitting .252 as a team, 11th in the majors.

Now the Yankees must hold their breath on Grisham.
