After years in development, a new “Big Bang Theory” spinoff is finally becoming a reality. “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” has been officially ordered to series by HBO Max, marking it as the first new show to receive a green light under the platformâs rebranded Max era.
According to a report in Variety, the show will bring back Kevin Sussman as Stuart Bloom, the unlucky yet lovable owner of a comic book shop. It will be helmed by “Big Bang Theory” creators Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and screenwriter Zak Penn.
What the Spinoff Is About & How It Connects to ‘The Big Bang Theory‘

As per Variety, unlike the original series and its grounded prequels, Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandyâs First Marriage, this new show takes a big swing into sci-fi territory.
According to the official logline, the story unfolds in the future, where Stuart accidentally triggers a multiversal apocalypse by tampering with a device created by Sheldon and Leonard in the finale of The Big Bang Theory.
He suddenly finds himself in the role of a reluctant hero, tasked with saving reality alongside a team of familiar oddballs â including his girlfriend Denise, geology nerd Bert, and Sheldon’s longtime rival Barry Kripke. Along the way, they’ll meet alternate-universe versions of fan-favorite characters from the original series.
Which Cast Members Are Returning So Far?
According to Variety, the confirmed cast for “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” includes Kevin Sussman reprising his role as Stuart, Lauren Lapkus as his girlfriend Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert the geologist, and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke.

While Jim Parsons (Sheldon) and Johnny Galecki (Leonard) havenât been officially announced, the multiverse storyline leaves the door wide open for their return, along with potential cameos from other original “Big Bang Theory” stars.
Chuck Lorre Says the Show Will Be Bolder, Nerdier & More Sci-Fi
Co-creator Chuck Lorre described the spinoff as a departure from his usual style, saying he wanted to challenge himself creatively.
âI wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone,â Lorre said, as per Variety. âSomething the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated, and argued about.â
Prady echoed that excitement, calling the writing process âdamn funâ and teasing a tone that blends nerdy sci-fi mythology with the sharp comedy fans know and love. âPutting characters we loved from The Big Bang Theory into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying,â Prady added.
What Comes Next for “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe”
The cast has already completed a table read, and development is now moving forward at HBO Max. While thereâs no release date yet, the show is officially underway with a creative team that knows the Big Bang universe inside and out.
With Lorre, Prady, and Penn steering the ship and Stuart stepping up as a reluctant multiverse hero, this may be the most unexpected â and most fun â entry into the Big Bang franchise yet.
