Giants Predicted to Cut Ties With Hometown QB Tommy DeVito

The New York Giants have a jam-packed quarterback room going into the 2025-26 season, which is a positive thing when it comes to signal-caller depth. But, sometimes there’s too much of a good thing, and there’s also a question as to whether the Giants will really need all of that depth come this fall.

The Giants currently have veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, rookie Jaxson Dart and hometown personality Tommy DeVito in their quarterback lineup. It’s mainly a new lineup, and the only quarterback still with the team who was on the squad in 2024 is DeVito. So, it’s fair to say that the Giants have gone through a complete quarterback makeover since parting ways with Daniel Jones last season.

Now, returning head coach Brian Daboll has some decisions to make heading into the 2025-26 season, and one of those will have to do with the quarterbacks on the team. It’s being predicted that he’ll actually part with DeVito, which would be a huge thing, because DeVito is such a hometown personality.

Tommy DeVito and the Giants Predicted to Split

Wilson is expected to be the starter for the Giants. He has the experience, having played in two big games, Super Bowl XLVIII and Super Bowl XLIX, and won a title with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014.

In a feature published on Wednesday, July 9, Mike Luciano of GmenHQ says that the complete makeover that the Giants have done with their quarterback room “all looks bad for Tommy DeVito, who has ridden his Italian heritage, status as a local high school star, and surprisingly competent level of play to some semi-stardom over the last few wretched seasons of Giants football.”

Luciano doesn’t mince words when talking about DeVito’s chances of making the roster come fall. “It is commonly accepted that teams in the NFL won’t carry four quarterbacks on the active roster, and there is no way that DeVito is going to overtake any of the three ahead of them based on his merit as a passer,” he says in the piece. “DeVito could live on the practice squad, but he may have played his last snap as a Giant.”

The Future of the Giants’ Quarterback Room

Looking at the future of the Giants, Luciano sees the Giants keeping Wilson “until the wheels fall off on the veteran’s NFL career” and also sees Dart as eventually being the franchise’s quarterback. Add to that Winston giving the team a “high-ceiling option,” and that pretty much leaves DeVito without anything to do. Dart may even start sooner than expected, if some of the predictions from talking heads such as Mike Florio of NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk come to fruition.

The good news for DeVito is that if he does part ways with the Giants, some other teams should be interested in him, even if it’s for the practice squad. “DeVito won’t challenge any incumbent starter with a tenuous hold on their QB1 job,” Luciano notes, “but he could give an offense some assurance that things won’t devolve into the unwatchable tier.”

So, those who love DeVito shouldn’t fret too much, because he should still have a place in the NFL if he splits with the Giants. But, it might not be in his hometown, which is a heartbreaker. Reach out with your thoughts on if DeVito and the Giants will part.
