The Chicago Bears have not had the start to the 2025 campaign that they were hoping for, as they collapsed in Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings before getting blown out by the Detroit Lions in Week 2. Now, they will be attempting to earn their first win of the season against the Dallas Cowboys, which certainly won’t be an easy task.
Making matters even more difficult, the Bears could be without their starting running back D’Andre Swift for this game, as he’s questionable to play with a groin injury. Ahead of kickoff, though, the team received a big update on his injury status that will surely catch the attention of fans.
D’Andre Swift Expected to Play for Bears in Week 3 vs. Cowboys
Swift is in his second season with the Bears, and his fit with the team feels tenuous heading into Week 3. After putting together a Pro Bowl campaign with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 that saw him rack up 1,049 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, Swift cashed in with a three-year, $24 million contract from Chicago in free agency.
In 2024, Swift took a step back, as he averaged a career-low 3.8 yards per carry. While part of that was due to the Bears’ abysmal offensive line, Swift’s 959 yards and six touchdowns left a little bit to be desired from the team and its fans. While Swift has been a bit better through the first two games in 2025 (29 CAR, 116 YDS, 1 TD, 6 REC, 18 YDS), he’s still only averaging four yards per carry.
In the buildup to Week 3, Swift has been dealing with a groin injury that has thrown his status for the game up in the air. And yet, while Swift isn’t 100% healthy, it sounds like he’s still going to play, as reports have emerged indicating that the former Pro Bowl running back has gotten the green light to take the field on Sunday.
“Bears RB D’Andre Swift, dealing with a quad injury, will play on Sunday against the Cowboys, source said,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on Saturday night.
Bears Hoping for Big Performance from D’Andre Swift in Week 3

Swift isn’t exactly a pure fit in new head coach Ben Johnson’s offensive scheme, and it isn’t much of a surprise that his name has popped up in trade rumors early this season. If Swift can’t play in this game, seventh-round rookie Kyle Monangai and Roschon Johnson would be in line for more work, but it seems like that isn’t an issue the team will have to deal with.
Chicago will be hoping that Swift can get going against a Dallas defense that allowed the New York Giants to score 37 points in Week 2 if he plays, but if he continues to struggle, the team could have to look for more help at the running back position. With kickoff being scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday, Swift has more time to get himself ready for this game, but all signs are pointing to him being on the field with the rest of his teammates.
