Bills Reunite With 2023 Draft Pick, Sign Him to Practice Squad

Per the NFL transaction wire, the Buffalo Bills are bringing back a former draft pick. G Nick Broeker is signing with the Bills practice squad after a tryout, reuniting him with the team that drafted him in the seventh round out of Ole Miss in 2023. He played both left tackle and left guard in college.

Broeker was cut by Buffalo coming out of the preseason in 2023, eventually landing on the Texans practice squad. He spent two seasons in Houston, appearing in 12 games between 2023 and 2024. In the NFL, he’s primarily played guard.

The Bills also brought in OT Gottlieb Ayedze, G Kyle Hergel, LB Power Echols, LB Otis Reese, and LB K.C. Ossai. Of the group, only Broeker was signed to the practice squad.

In Broeker, the Bills are adding some interior offensive line depth with NFL experience. It’s unlikely he’ll ever play snaps in a game unless the Bills experience a rash of injuries, but he’ll get some scout team reps and provide insurance at an important position.

The Buffalo Bills’ Offensive Line is Imposing Their Will Early

Through three games, the Bills are leading the NFL in rushing yards per game, at 163. They’re averaging 4.8 yards per attempt on the ground as a team, with lead RB James Cook out at 5.4 yards per carry. QB Josh Allen has been sacked just four times total this season. The offensive line is firing on all cylinders.

A big reason for that is the continuity Buffalo has up front. They return all five starters from 2024 along the offensive line: LT Dion Dawkins, LG David Edwards, C Connor McGovern, RG O’Cyrus Torrence, and RT Spencer Brown. All of these players are positives at their respective positions, with Torrence and Brown in particular being road-graders in the run game. This unit has grown and developed together over several years. Three of them (Dawkins, Torrence, and Brown) are former Bills draft picks, all in the second or third rounds. That’s both good value and retention for some of your core pieces.

The Buffalo Bills Have Positioned Themselves Well in the AFC Playoff Race

It’s almost a foregone conclusion that the Bills will win the AFC East. Not just because they’ve done so five years in a row, but because they already have a two-game lead over the second-place Patriots just three games into the season. They might set a record for the margin they win the division by.

Instead, let’s look at the wider AFC playoff picture. The Bills have gotten to the AFC Championship Game with Allen under center twice. Both times, the Chiefs sent them home. This year, the goal is going all the way.

To that end, the Bills already scored a critical tiebreaker over the Ravens in Week 1. The Chiefs already have two losses and even if they get right by the end of the year, might have too many losses to compete for the AFC’s No. 1 seed. Buffalo’s top competition might be the Los Angeles Chargers. But in an easier division, the Bills have the edge there, as well.
