White Sox general manager Chris Getz said at SoxFest Live that he anticipated some deals would be made.
On Sunday, a source confirmed that the Sox are acquiring hard-throwing reliever Jordan Hicks, pitching prospect David Sandlin and two players to be named from the Red Sox for right-hander Gage Ziehl and a player to be named.
The deal is less about acquiring Hicks, a right-hander who has a 5.19 ERA over the last two seasons since signing a four-year, $44 million contract, and more about acquiring Sandlin, who was a top-10 prospect in the Red Sox’ organization.
Getz said that the team would remain open-minded in regard to what role Hicks would play and that Sandlin, a right-hander, could “impact the starting rotation this year.”
He was excited about bringing Sandlin into the organization because of his high-octane velocity. The Sox have been interested in Sandlin for a long time.
“We view this [as] repurposing of the Luis Robert Jr. money,” Getz said on Zoom.
