Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin Gives Major Clue About His Future

The greatest goal scorer in the history of the National Hockey League is Washington Capitals team captain Alex Ovechkin, who, just over one year ago, officially broke the record set by Wayne Gretzky with his 895th career goal.

So far as the 2025-26 NHL regular season nears a conclusion, Ovechkin has increased that total to 928, giving him over 1,000 goals combined between the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

However, as the old saying goes, Father Time is undefeated. Ovechkin is 40 years old, and not getting any younger. He also happens to be playing in the final season of his current contract, and can become an unrestricted free agent beginning on July 1. There has been widespread speculation that this could potentially be his final campaign in the NHL, but what does Ovechkin himself have to say about it?

For Capitals fans and hockey fans in general pining to know the future Hall of Fame forward’s plans, there is a strong possibility he could go in either direction.

Washington Capitals Hall Of Famer Alex Ovechkin Breaks Silence On His Future Plans

In a yet to be released interview, Ovechkin said that he plans on making a decision about his future in the NHL and the Capitals during the summer after discussing the important matter with his family and club owner Ted Leonsis.

“Not yet. We’re going to make a decision in the summer, I’m going to talk with my family, with Ted (Leonsis)….I’ll make a decision in the summer,” Ovechkin said.

“Health wise, I’m going to be 41 years old in September, so you just have to be smart about it.”

Ovechkin also made it clear that he still has a passion for playing the game and for scoring goals, which he made a Hall of Fame career out of.

“When you love something, you do it with heart. I love playing hockey, I love scoring goals,” he said.

Right now, the Capitals have four games left in their regular season schedule, and a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is not a sure thing.

Just Over One Year Ago, Alex Ovechkin Broke Wayne Gretzky’s Scoring Record

It was just over one year ago today that Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career NHL goals, which was set in his last year in the League in 1998-99, in a game against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena.

Ovechkin whistled a shot past Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin, a fellow Russian. The game was paused for a special ceremony involving NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and Gretzky himself, who was seen applauding when the milestone goal was scored.

Despite all of his impressive career accolades, Ovechkin has only lifted the Stanley Cup one time, which took place in 2018 after their historic victory in the Stanley Cup Final over the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.

Since then, the Capitals have had minimal success in the postseason, starting the following campaign when they were ousted in seven games in the opening round.

Regardless, Ovechkin’s number will hang from the rafters at Capital One Arena and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
