Billy Crystal Holds Back Tears Recalling Final Conversation With Rob Reiner the Night Before His Tragic Passing

Billy Crystal is sharing a deeply personal memory of his last conversation with longtime friend Rob Reiner, offering a heartfelt look at their final moments together. As he reflects on a friendship that meant so much to him, Crystal spoke during an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” recalling the evening they spent together just hours before Reiner’s passing and the decades of memories they built along the way.

A Conversation About Movies and Meaning

Crystal shared that their final night together was spent looking back on their journeys and the evolution of the film industry. “We had spent the night before together and [were] talking about our careers together,” Crystal said.

“We were talking about the movie business and how it’s changed and how people don’t go to theaters like they used to.”

He said the conversation soon turned to what really matters beyond success. “We talked about the fact that you can’t control how a movie is going to do. What you can control is the experience of making it,” he shared.

A piece of advice from that moment continues to stay with him.

“He said, ‘That’s something you always have.’ Hits are great to have, but it’s the people that you hold on to,” Crystal recalled. “I kept that in my heart.”

Remembering a Lifelong Friend

Crystal said Reiner had a way of filling every room with humor and honesty, leaving behind memories that are now deeply felt in his absence. He described him as a “hilarious, devoted, opinionated” friend whose presence is still missed.

“There are so many moments that I just — when something good happens or ‘Isn’t that crazy?’ — I want to pick up the phone and call,” Crystal said. “Because that’s what we would do.”

Looking back, he added, “It’s a profound loss for — I’m just going to say humanity, because he was the most human person that I ever met.”

A Tribute That Meant Everything

Crystal also shared how he paid tribute to Reiner at the 2026 Oscars, creating a moment that brought together many of the people who were part of the director’s journey.

“His first seven movies were incredibly different and so great,” he said. “I can get the cast of those movies together to walk out with me; that would have made him really smile.”

With the help of the Academy, he turned that idea into reality.

“So I got in touch with all of them. The Academy was great in getting most of them there. … We were able to hold hands and walk out there in tribute with a beautiful picture of Rob and Michelle because they were our closest friends.”

A Wholesome Friendship That Spanned Decades

Crystal first met Reiner in 1975 on the set of “All in the Family,” where they played best friends. What began as a working relationship soon became a lifelong bond that shaped much of his life.

“It was a thrill to see him evolve from a great comic actor to a skilled storyteller,” Crystal said during his Oscars tribute.

“For us, who had the privilege of working with and knowing him and loving him, all we can say is, ‘Buddy, what fun we had storming the castle.’”

Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, died in December 2025 at ages 78 and 70.

Even now, Crystal holds onto the memories they built together, carrying them with him in the quieter moments that follow such a profound loss.
