Olympic gold medal figure skater and NBC Sports commentator Tara Lipinski is feeling the love after vulnerably opening up about the “devastating” setback she’s been privately dealing with.
On May 1, 2026, Lipinski — who recently competed with her broadcast partner Johnny Weir on “The Traitors” — revealed in a lengthy Instagram post that she and her husband, Todd Kapostasy, recently “lost our baby” when the surrogate carrying their second child suffered a miscarriage during the second trimester of her pregnancy.
Tara Lipinski & Todd Kapostasy Shared in May 2025 That They Were Trying for Their Second Baby
Lipinski, who won the 1998 Olympic gold medal in women’s figure skating, has been open about her and Kapostasy’s infertility struggles. According to People, the couple attempted in vitro fertilization (IVF) multiple times, and Lipinski underwent several surgeries before they turned to a surrogate to carry their firstborn, daughter Georgie, born in October 2023.
In May 2025, Lipinski told the outlet that they were starting the process to expand their family, noting that they knew “that’s a long process and there’s always what ifs with that, but fingers crossed … maybe that can happen for us.”
In her heartbreaking post a year later, Lipinski shared that she “grieved” when they learned the surrogate who carried Georgie wasn’t “medically cleared to proceed with our sibling journey.” She then wrote, “From the long road in finding a surrogate, to medical clearance setbacks, to a failed transfer, and now this loss⦠it hasnât been an easy road.”
Naturally, the couple was thrilled when they did find a surrogate willing and able to carry their baby. Lipinski acknowledged in her post, “I feel incredibly lucky for the woman who carried our baby (our angel) who will always hold such a special place in my heart. And for our first surrogate, who has continued to support me from afar through this second journey. We will forever be connected.”
“A second trimester loss was devastating,” Lipinski continued. “Something new to add to the long list of heartbreaks weâve endured on this fertility journey. Another memory that will be hard to erase. That appointment will be etched in my mind forever as well as all the steps that came after when a pregnancy is that far along. My heart goes out to all the people who have experienced miscarriage, baby loss and stillbirth. You are warriors.”
Celebrities & Fans Have Showered Tara Lipinski With Love
Lipinski was flooded with supportive comments from fans, including many who’ve experienced similar challenges, and she received many kind notes from celebrities on her post, including from actress and “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” alum Lisa Rinna, who wrote, “Sending you so so so much loveâ¤ï¸â¤ï¸”
Renowned fashion designer Vera Wang, whose luxe clothing Lipinski often wears, wrote, “â¦â¦â¦ VW. We women ARE warriors All ððð¹ðª”
Actress Beverly Mitchell commented, “So sorry! Sending you all the loveâ¤ï¸”
ABC News Correspondent Will Ganss chimed in, “Sending you so much love. Your openness has helped SO MANY of us. Itâs a small consolation but thank you for your vulnerability and visibility throughout all of this ððð”
But the most meaningful comments came from thousands of fellow moms and moms-to-be, relating and empathizing with Lipinski in heartfelt messages, including one that said, “My heart goes out to you ð. I experienced a 20 week loss of my daughter almost 20 years ago. I still canât bring myself to go to her grave. Mourn at your own pace and give your daughter extra hugs. You are part of a large club, larger than people realize. Sending you love”
Tara Lipinski Still Hopes to Become a Mother Again
Since Lipinski had not shared publicly that she and her husband were anticipating the arrival of their second child, she didn’t share their loss when it happened, either. So writing about it on social media was extremely difficult, she said.
“If youâre part of this community, you know how sharing in the moment can break you,” she wrote. “Sometimes just writing it down or saying it aloud makes it feel that much more real. It takes so much to pick yourself up and start over- and keep pushing. Putting blinders on can sometimes feel a little easier and doing it publicly always feels daunting.”
Earlier in the day, before she’d revealed their loss, Lipinski told Maria Shriver on “Today” in a pre-taped interview that she and Kapostasy were planning to continue trying for another baby through surrogacy.
Actress and singer LeAnn Rimes was also part of the discussion among famous women in their 40s. When she saw Lipinski’s post, she wrote, “oh, loveâ¦. iâm so deeply sorry. sending you and your family a ton of healing through this journey. â¤ï¸”
