A PlayStation studio is working on a PS6 game featuring horror shooter mechanics, according to a new report, and it could relate to a rumoured Until Dawn sequel.

While Sony hasn’t announced an official release date for the PlayStation 6, early word suggests the next generation of consoles could be upon us in 2027.

If that’s the case, Sony is presumably working on several games to show off the PlayStation 6. Games like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, while announced for the PlayStation 5, will likely be a cross-gen title, but there’s otherwise a big question mark around what titles Sony is cooking up for the console.

However, a new report has offered some details around one project in the works for Sony’s next console, which could relate to a prior rumour.

According to a report on MP1st, Sony is working with an unnamed studio to develop a next generation game featuring ‘immersive third person horror shooter’ mechanics in Unreal Engine 5. However, they claim the title might not be a straight shooter, but simply has those mechanics as part of the overall experience.

Additionally, they claim the game utilises motion performance capture and has a player progression system of some kind.

While the information is vague, there’s a suggestion this could relate to a rumoured project at Horizon Call Of The Mountain developer Firesprite. The studio, which was acquired by Sony in 2021, has apparently been working on a title codenamed Project Heartbreak, which some believe is an Until Dawn sequel.

After Firesprite’s Twisted Metal game was cancelled in 2024, it was unclear if Project Heartbreak was still in development. However, according to MP1st, the game, also said to be using Unreal Engine 5, was still in development as of ‘late last year’.

There’s a lot of evidence to suggest some kind of Until Dawn sequel is underway, after the remake of the original added a new ending, but it’s unclear if Firesprite is the one making it. The original game was created by fellow British studio Supermassive Games, who are set to release new horror game Directive 8020 this month.

Prior reports have also connected Firesprite with a new Forbidden Siren game, which is a lesser known PlayStation 2 horror franchise that originally stemmed from Japan Studio. The British connection makes the Until Dawn 2 rumour seem more likely, but the ‘horror shooter’ description could fit the former too.

Of course, this project might be unrelated to Firesprite altogether, but it certainly feels like the most plausible scenario based on past rumours.

As for Sony’s other developers, Insomniac is set to launch Marvel’s Wolverine later this year. Santa Monica Studio is rumoured to be working on a new game set within the God Of War universe, while Sony Bend was recently hiring for a ‘AAA console title’.
