The three-hour event, which kicked off at 8 p.m. ET, featured many other performers. In addition to Aiken, they included: Alicia Keys, Brad Paisley, Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms, Cameron Whitcomb, En Vogue, Jason Mraz, Lee Ann Womack, Mötley Crüe, Nelly, Shinedown, Tori Kelly.
For his time on the stage, Aiken, who was the “American Idol” Season 2 runner-up to Ruben Studdard, sang a brand new ballad titled “Rewind.” He also sang a duet of âDon’t Let The Sun Go Down On Meâ by Elton with Season 24 contestant Braden Rumfelt.
Fans Reacted to Aiken’s Finale Performance on Social Media
As Aiken, 47, sang his new song on the finale, “American Idol” viewers took to X to react to the performance and seeing him again after so many years.
One X user wrote, “Clay Aiken looks good. I was wondering what happened to him.”
Someone else exclaimed on X, “OMG CLAY AIKEN IâM BACK IN 6th GRADE AGAIN.”
Another viewer echoed, “Loved the Braden Rumfelt Clay Aiken performance.”
A different X user posted, “What a throwback with Clay Aiken.”
Yet another X user proclaimed, “Hello Clay Aiken!!!”
Meanwhile, others wondered if there were technical difficulties with the sound. One viewer asked via X, “Was the key too high for Clay Aiken? Or he had to scream to hear himself?” Another X user wondered, “What happened to Clay Aiken? He used to sing so beautifully. Does he maybe have a cold?”
To that, someone shared, “Just saw him in concert two years ago and he was amazing and still hitting those high notes. Could be something with the Idol stage.”
Someone else replied, “I think youâre right because the guy singing with him was also a bit off,” as a second agreed, writing, “He always had a very strong vocal voice. I still think the sound is off somewhat tonight.”
Aiken Teased the Big Moment the Day Before the Finale
One day before the “American Idol” grand finale, Aiken took to Instagram with a clip teasing “Rewind” and his performance on the show where it all started.
“Only a few hours left until we get to ‘feel for the first time⦒ ð,” he captioned the update. “‘Rewind’ is out TOMORROW, and Iâll be performing it for the first time on the @americanidol finale! Make sure you tune in ð.”
In the comments, Aiken’s followers shared their reactions to the snippet of “Rewind.” Broadway star Jessica Vosk (who previously played Elphaba in “Wicked”) wrote, “Honey!! ð¥ð¥ð¥ð¥.”
Another fan declared, “Song of the summer, Iâm calling it right now.”
DJ and producer Dave Audé exclaimed, “Itâs so good I couldnât be prouder!!! â¤ï¸.”
A different follower asked if Aiken wrote the song, to which he replied, “Only the inspiration/idea… the real credit goes to @coltonaverymusic and @daveaude.”
However, co-songwriter Colton Avery added, “@clayaiken the song exists because all 3 of us got together with your vision, man. The credit goes to all involved! You crushed it! Iâm stoked for your comeback!”
