Three people have died after a serious crash involving two cars in Northumberland on a road plagued by collisions.
The A1 near Alnwick, south of the historic Lindisfarne Castle, was closed for hours after the crash yesterday afternoon.
Emergency services were alerted after reports of the smash between Denwick and South Charlton near the Scottish Borders at about 2.30pm.
While the exact cause of the incident is under investigation, one of the vehicles, a silver Volkswagen Polo travelling north, is said to have collided with a southbound red Hyundai i20.
The driver of the Hyundai, a man in his 80s, and a female passenger, in her 70s, were pronounced dead at the scene.
A female passenger in the Polo, aged in her 60s, also succumbed to her injuries at the crash site.
The Polo’s driver, a man in his 60s, was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle by air ambulance with serious injuries, according to Chronicle Live.
The latest collision has put the spotlight on the road, which has seen a spate of crashes recently.
Two people were injured after a crash involving two cars and a motorhome near Alnwick on May 4.
Last month, four people were hurt in another crash on the A1 near Belford.
Speaking to the Northumberland Gazette, David Smith, the MP for North Northumberland, commented on the incidents: ‘First and foremost it is awful to hear of more collisions along the A1. My thoughts are with all those affected.
‘The A1 is not safe enough. There have been no significant improvements along the road since 2014, and pressure will increase as we enter the summer season.’
Local leaders have also called for action after concerns over the safety of the major road.
