Around 1:30 a.m., the two men, 40 and 37, were standing on the sidewalk in the 7900 block of South Maryland Avenue when an assailant approached, opened fire and then ran away, Chicago police said.

The 40-year-old was shot in his back; the 37-year-old was wounded in his ankle, arm and torso, police said.

Both were taken to Jackson Park Hospital where they were in critical condition, officials said.
