Two people have died and three suffered serious injuries after a ‘devastating’ head-on crash yesterday morning.
The drivers of both vehicles – a woman in her 50s and a man in his 40s – died after their cars collided at a junction on the A1 north of Alnwick, Northumberland, at around 4am on Saturday.
Two women in their 20s and a secondary-school-aged boy were rushed to hospital with serious injuries, police said.
Sergeant Alex Partington, of Northumbria Police, expressed his ‘heartfelt condolences’ to everyone affected as he confirmed that an investigation into the crash was underway.
He also appealed for any witnesses to come forward, particularly those with dashcam footage.

The other woman was reportedly a passenger in the Vauxhall.
Police said they have contacted the families of everyone involved.
They also closed a section of the busy road between Ellingham and Purdy Lodge for around 10 hours to deal with the aftermath of the crash.
The road has since reopened.
Sergeant Partington added: ‘Our investigation to establish the exact circumstances leading to this collision is now underway, and we are already conducting a range of enquiries.
‘We are now appealing to any motorists or witnesses who were travelling in the area at this time to come forward.
‘We are particularly keen to hear from those who have dashcam footage which may have captured the collision or this section of road in the moments leading up to it.
‘No matter how insignificant your information may seem, it could prove vital to our investigation and help provide answers to the loved ones of all affected.’
