Freebie of the week: All national parks are free on these days

All national parks are free to visit this holiday weekend, Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5. So get on out there and enjoy!

With some park entrance fees up to $50, these free days can definitely save you money, but take my advice: Get there at dawn and do your sightseeing before it gets hot, and especially before the thundering hordes arrive. These free days are popular, as you might guess.

This year, the free entry days are only for U.S. citizens and legal residents. At some of the most popular parks, foreigners will pay much higher fees, including $100 per person nonresident entrance fees for adults over age 16, even if they’re on a tour bus. Foreigners who want to visit parks can pay $250 for an annual nonresident pass.

You don’t need to sign up in advance, but make sure you don’t need reservations (which you probably don’t). Go to recreation.gov and search for the park you want and “timed entry” to find the reservation information.

Here are the nine national parks in California: Channel Islands (the boat ride won’t be free), Death ValleyJoshua TreeLassenPinnaclesRedwoodSequoia and Kings Canyon, and Yosemite.

The next free national park day will be Aug. 25 — the 110th birthday of the National Park Service.
