Patti Lupone ‘furious’ after LGBTQ+ cruise ship she’s performing on banned from Turkey

If you were hoping Pride Month would end with the internet calming down, I’m afraid Patti LuPone has other plans.

The Broadway legend, 77, has revealed that a cruise ship she’s due to perform on has been banned from docking in Turkey because it’s carrying, in her words, ‘a magnificent ship full of gay men. And me.’

It that’s not already the opening line of next year’s Tony Awards, someone has dropped the ball.

LuPone shared the news on Instagram, explaining that authorities had refused to allow the Atlantis Events cruise to stop at ports in Istanbul and Kuşadası.

‘I am shocked,’ she wrote.

‘The Atlantis cruise I am performing on next week has been banned from entering Turkey. A ship — a magnificent ship full of gay men. And me. Denied entry to Turkey simply because of who is on board.’

She added, with magnificent drama: ‘I am furious, but I am sailing.’ The actor promised she’ll still perform for passengers as the cruise heads elsewhere.

‘I am ready to perform for all the wonderful men on this Atlantis cruise, who deserve so much better than this.’

According to Turkish authorities, the decision was made because of the country’s ‘moral standards’ and ‘family values.’

Instead of Turkey, the cruise will now visit Cairo and Crete. Rich Campbell, president and CEO of Atlantis Events, said it was the first time in the company’s history that a country had explicitly refused entry because of who was onboard.

‘It’s pretty stunning, to be honest,’ he told CNN. ‘I mean, the reasoning behind it is that it’s a gay group.’

He stressed that Atlantis isn’t a political organisation.

‘We are not there for anything except to spend money, have a good time, take tours and be incredibly respectful to every culture we visit.’

It all feels surreal, like we’ve reached a point where international news headlines read like rejected plotlines from The White Lotus.

‘A luxury cruise carrying Patti LuPone and thousands of gay men has been turned away from Turkey’ sounds less like real life and more like the kind of fever dream someone has after falling asleep watching Bravo.

Still, if there’s anyone capable of turning pigeons into doves and diplomatic disappointment into a standing ovation, it’s Patti LuPone. And somewhere between Crete and Cairo, there will soon be a ship full of disappointed holidaymakers getting a private Broadway performance.

Which, all things considered, isn’t the worst consolation prize.
