A 2019 mini-series which was part-directed by George Clooney, who also stars, is now available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
The dark satire, based on Joseph Heller’s 1961 novel, saw Christopher Abbott (Girls, Poor Things), 40, playing the lead character Captain John Yossarian.
Set in World War Two, the story follows the Air Force bombardier who finds himself in an impossible situation as he tries to escape the fighting.
Captain Yossarian discovers that the mentally unwell can be dismissed from military service, but by applying to be excused because of your mental state you are deemed fit for missions.
Catch-22 received 84% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and was praised by fans on the internet.
One user on Reddit, GOATBrady4Life called it ‘criminally neglected’ and said: ‘Somehow the series fell through the cracks and was never really talked about, and I think it deserves more recognition.’
Now might be the time it gets just this, as the streamer has added it to its roster of TV shows.
The war drama was nominated for two Emmys for its special visual effects and sound editing – it boasts a 7.7/10 star rating on IMDb.
Its logline reads: ‘Catch-22 is the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian, a US Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him.
Will you be watching Catch-22 on Amazon Prime Video?
-
Absolutely – it sounds great!
-
Not really my thing…
‘But his real problem is not the enemy, but rather his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service.
‘Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to avoid his military assignments, he’ll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule which specifies that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers which are real and immediate is the process of a rational mind; a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty.’
Originally broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK, this Hulu production isn’t loved by all.
Tegeus-Cromis_2000 said on Reddit: ‘I love the book, liked the old movie, couldn’t get through the series. It was just wooden and boring.’
The classic film came out in 1970, starring Alan Arkin and Orson Welles.
Abject_Rhubarb_3430, on the other hand, called it ‘amazing’. They said: ‘I randomly came across it last week and I finished last week.’
It marked Clooney’s first series regular role since he played Doug Ross on ER in the nineties.
The filmmaker also executive produced the show.
