ESPN ranks Bears’ Caleb Williams above Super Bowl-winning QB

A poll of NFL coaches, executives and scouts conducted by ESPN ranked the BearsCaleb Williams as the 10th-best quarterback in the NFL. He finished one spot behind the Lions’ Jared Goff and two ahead of rival Jordan Love in the poll, which was released Monday morning.

Williams barely edged out Sam Darnold, the Seahawks’ Super Bowl-winning quarterback, as well as Love and the Commanders’ Jayden Daniels.

More than 70 voters submitted a ballot to ESPN. They were tasked with picking the best players right now, not based on any past success or future projections. ESPN settled tiebreakers with additional research and interviews.

The tiebreaker that separated Williams from Darnold, Love and Daniels was that voters found him the most difficult to gameplan against.

The most complimentary voter picked Williams sixth among NFL quarterbacks, while many didn’t rank him in the top 10.

Quotes by anonymous voters echoed some of the Bears’ own feelings about Williams’ 2025 season — he’s one of the best crunch-time closers in the sport but is also too erratic of a passer early in games. Some analysts have considered the latter to be disqualifying — Fox analyst Mark Schlereth said recently that Williams was “not a good quarterback because he doesn’t play on schedule,”

The Bills’ Josh Allen was ranked ESPN’s top quarterback, followed by the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, the Rams’ Matthew Stafford, the Bengals’ Joe Burrow and the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson. Voters ranked the Cowboys’ Dak Prescott, the Chargers’ Justin Herbert, the Patriots’ Drake Maye and Jared Goff as Quarterbacks 6-9.

Honorable mention went to Darnold, Love and Daniels as well as 49ers’ Brock Purdy, the Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield, the Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence and the Eagles’ Jalen Hurts. The Broncos’ Bo Nix, the Texans’ C.J. Stroud and the Colts’ Daniel Jones also received at least one vote.

He’s the last Bears draft pick to sign.
Shield your eyes, Bears traditionalists. Ranking the Bears by position group entering training camp produces far more offensive standouts than those who play defense.
The Feb. 14 Super Bowl in Los Angeles and April 29-May 1 draft in Washington, D.C., were previously set. The NFL announced other key dates for the upcoming season Tuesday.
