After President Trump claimed during his prime-time televised speech on Thursday that China interfered in the 2020 presidential election, CIA Director John Ratcliffe supported the President’s claim by providing “declassified documents for public release.”
Ratcliffe, who was Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s first administration, wrote: “I have long publicly highlighted China’s nefarious efforts to influence the 2020 election against President Trump, as evidenced by my dissent to the flawed January 2021 Intelligence Community Assessment.”

Several critics of the Trump administration, including Tommy Vietor, a former Obama National Security Council spokesman, argued that the documents released by Ratcliffe did not provide evidence of interference by China.
Vietor wrote: “The consensus intel community assessment was that China did NOT try to influence the 2020 election. One intel officer had an alternative view, which was that ‘Beijing has taken at least some low-level exploratory steps’ but not the ‘most aggressive options’ Hardly a smoking gun!”
U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) told MS Now that Trump’s election claims had been examined by the bipartisan Senate Intel Committee, which concluded that no foreign government changed any votes in the 2020 election.

Warner added: “While we’re on the topic of declassifying intelligence assessments…. Trump’s IC still hasn’t released the unclassified version of the IC assessment of the 2024 election- something released within months of the 2020 and 2022 federal elections. Why won’t he? What’s the hold up?”
Warner also responded with a jab at Ratcliffe: “The only election that Trump is concerned about is 2020. That was the election that his administration was in charge of. As a matter of fact, Mr. Ratcliffe was DNI then. He’s CIA director now. If there were mistakes made, why is he CIA director?”
Warner’s criticism of “Trump’s IC” targets two officials who have served as DNI during Trump’s second term: Tulsi Gabbard, who left her position in April, and current acting DNI Bill Pulte, who will be replaced by nominee Jay Clayton if he is confirmed by the Senate.
