‘Matchbox The Movie’ Trailer: John Cena & Jessica Biel Star in Apple TV Feature Inspired By Mattel’s Toy Cars
(Apple TV)
Just when you thought Hollywood had exhausted all remaining IP from comic books, video games, and TV shows, Apple TV borrowed a page from the Barbie playbook and made a feature-length flick based on Mattel’s tiny Matchbox cars.
Matchbox The Movie is headlined by John Cena—who currently appears opposite Eric Andre in the Netflix comedy Little Brother—and former Maxim cover star Jessica Biel. The action-heavy trailer follows a group of friends since childhood “who have their lives upended when undercover CIA agent Sean (John Cena), their long-absent former leader, returns to their small town and unwittingly gets them embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world,” explains Apple TV in its official plot summary.

While the film’s Ludacris-scored trailer racked up more than 4 million views within its first 24 hours on YouTube, plenty of commenters poked fun at the throwback toy-inspired film’s premise. One compared it to “an elaborate, high-budget comedy sketch by SNL” while another cracked, “Totally not a floating spec script with Matchbox lazily slapped in it.” Director Sam Hargrave—who previously helmed the Chris Hemsworth-led Extraction and Extraction 2—oversees a cast that also includes Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, and Teyonah Parris.
Matchbox The Movie is set to hit Apple TV on October 9. Watch the official trailer below.
