Security guard fatally shot at Gary train station by 9 law enforcement officers

An armed security guard acting “unusual and erratic” near a Gary train station was fatally shot Friday night after six Gary police officers and three Lake County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, authorities said.

Officers were called to Broadway and 4th Avenue, near Gary’s City Hall, around 11 p.m. There, they confronted the security guard, Kenneth Williams, according to the Indiana State Police and Lake County coroner’s office. Gary officers and Lake County deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation, but a “confrontation” with Williams led to a shootout, according to authorities.

Williams, 67, was pronounced dead at the scene. Six Gary police officers and three Lake County Sheriff’s officers fired their guns during the incident, Indiana State Police said in a statement.

The state police are investigating the incident. The officers involved are on administrative leave.
