Mother charged with killing 2-year-old child in Frankfort before trying to harm herself

A mother has been charged with murdering her 2-year-old child at a home in south suburban Frankfort, where authorities found the boy unresponsive and the mother trying to harm herself.

Corie A. Walsh, 40, remains held for medical treatment and, once released, will be transferred to Will County Jail to await a detention hearing on three counts of first-degree murder, Frankfort Police Chief Leanne Chelepis said in a news release.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” Chelepis said in the statement. “We ask our community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers and to respect their privacy as they navigate this profoundly difficult time.”

Officers responded around 4 p.m. Tuesday to the home in the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court for a call of an unresponsive child, police have said. The boy was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, police said. The Will County coroner’s office said the death was an “apparent homicide,” and has not released a cause or the boy’s name.

Police said the child’s mother also was inside the home, police have said. She was trying to harm herself, and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

At the time of the call, three other children were at the home unharmed, Chelepis said in Friday’s statement.
