Detectives found a revolver, a blood trail and video footage from Metra after three assailants gunned down a South Shore boy in a skate park earlier this week in the South Loop.
Three assailants attacked Dorian D. Smith, shooting him in the neck just after 9 p.m. Wednesday in the skate park at 1135 S. Michigan Ave. before running away north to Metra train tracks, according to Chicago police reports obtained by the Sun-Times.
Smith, who apparently tried to run away in the opposite direction, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m., the reports said. An autopsy determined Smith, of the South Shore neighborhood, died of a gunshot wound to the neck and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Officers who responded to a call of shots fired found blood droplets trailing in a southeast direction across the skate park leading to a pool of blood, according to the reports.
No shell casings were located on scene but a revolver, which does not expel shell casings, was found on a Metra platform, according to the reports.
Smith was a CPS student at Art in Motion, a charter school, according to the report. The school did not respond to requests for comment.
In a statement released Friday, Lamont J. Robinson (4th) condemned the “heartbreaking” attack, which was “deeply unsettling” for residents and also for the many bystanders attending a Chicago Fire game at Soldier Field, which began about 8:30 p.m.
“There are no adequate words for a family having to bury a 16-year-old, someone who should have had his whole life ahead of him, now taken by gun violence,” Robinson said in the statement. “My deepest condolences go to this young man’s family, his friends, and everyone who knew and loved him.”
“As Vice Chair of the Police and Fire Committee, I condemn this reckless act of gun violence,” Robinson said in the statement. “We owe this family answers, and we owe our community action. We need to find whoever is responsible and hold them accountable.”
“We will continue working with CPD, the Park District, and our community partners to make sure our public spaces are safe, and to do everything we can to prevent another family from experiencing this kind of heartbreak,” Robinson said in the statement.
“I urge anyone who witnessed what happened or has information to come forward and help detectives,” the statement concluded.
Area 3 detectives are investigating.
No arrests have been made.
