‘World’s worst guard dog’ brings intruder a toy instead of scaring him away

A homeless man got an unexpected welcome when he broke into a house and was confronted by ‘the world’s worst guard dog’ – the owner’s golden retriever.

Security footage from the family’s Ring CCTV system showed the stranger looking nervous as four-year-old Nash approached.

But rather than scare him off – or even offer so much as a bark to raise the alarm – Nash bought the stranger a toy and patiently waited for the man to play with him.

The image of Nash sitting with his tail wagging while the intruder nervously peers out the window, no doubt hearing the approaching sirens of the San Diego Police Department, melted the hearts of social media users, who said the encounter was ‘both scary and wholesome all at the same time’.

Homeowner Dante Rowley posted a clip of the incident online.

Set to the Bad Boys theme of cult TV show Cops, he described in the captions how he got a Ring alert as he was boarding a flight.

The footage shows a man jumping over the fence and then propping a ladder up against the building so he could climb in through a window.

‘The guy made himself at home,’ Dante wrote. ‘Took off his shirt and shoes and ate a few yogurts and then passed out on the blanket we left out for the dogs.’

He soon found out the house wasn’t completely empty though, with the family’s two dogs also inside.

The man can perhaps count himself lucky it was Nash who confronted him and saw him as a friend rather than a foe.

Nash wasn’t even phased when the police sent a small army of officers to the house, with the footage showing him fetching the toy again and stopping by each one for a stroke.

Donna Webster commented: ‘Wait— Is Nash presenting a TOY to the burglar? Is he bearing gifts?!?? I CANNOT!!!!!’

Dionne Parett wrote: ‘The dog of course brought him a toy because that’s what a dog does. Sweet boy. No one better say nothing about that dog!!’

Sara Wells replied: ‘The dog with his toy, wagging his tail at the burglar had me absolutely dead.’

Thinking outside the box, another user posted: ‘In his defense the dog could have been protecting the house by offering the most valuable things he could think to bring in hopes the robber would accept and leave.’

Bryan Galvan added: ‘Love the cop who gave the puppy some pets before drawing their pistol.’

The intruder was chased through the house by a drone and was then arrested after climbing back outside where the officers were waiting for him.
