A DuPage County resident with a confirmed case of measles traveled through O’Hare International Airport last week, health officials announced Wednesday.
The resident was vaccinated and returned from an international trip last Thursday, according to the DuPage County Health Department.
Health officials said it was “uncommon” for a vaccinated person to test positive for measles, but it was possible “when there is intense or prolonged exposure to a person with measles.”
“Our community’s safety is our priority,” said Adam Forker, executive director of the DCHD. “Our team is actively working on following up with individuals who may have been potentially exposed. Vaccination continues to provide strong protection, even in a rare breakthrough case.”
Health officials said they were working to contact anyone who may have been exposed.
Anyone who was at O’Hare Airport, Terminal 5 on Oct. 15 between 4:20 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. should contact DCHD at 630-682-7400.
As of Wednesday, there were 24 confirmed cases of measles so far this year, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Last month, health officials confirmed an out-of-state traveler with measles traveled through Union Station.
The stricken traveler was at Union Station on Aug. 27 after 8 p.m. through Aug. 28, according to a statement from the Chicago Department of Public Health.
